Ice wedges in Siberia

Siberia is known for two things, gulags and freezing temperature. Temperatures here a perfect for glaciers to form, but alas non exist. Instead "ice wedges" formed in the earths permafrost allow geologists to explore the climate, specifically winter climates, in great detail. Summer climates are usually estimated through pollen collections or tree rings, but seeing that plants only bloom in summer the winter seasons are always un-documented. These ice wedges however have solved these scientists problems!
