When looking for signs of pollution in water, many might
look for floating bottles or trash. However, research is showing that for the
Great Lakes the problem may lie with smaller particles. Scientists have found
that small synthetic fibers have made their way in to the lakes. Much of these
fibers are remnants from garments after being washed and passing through
wastewater treatment facilities. These micro pieces of plastic can be harmful
to organisms within the lakes ecosystems. Despite this, they have received
relatively little attention. To read more on The Guardian article click here.
