Organic Cotton

I can guarantee all of us wear have a few articles of clothing on that are cotton based material. Cotton can be found most frequently in products such as clothing, bedding, and even in certain foods we eat. But cotton production is having a pretty big impact of the environment. In 2003 it was reported that 55 million pounds of pesticides were being sprayed over 12.8 million acres of cotton. Harmful chemicals such as pesticides can lead to birth defects, reproductive disorders and a weakened immune system.

Thankfully clothing companies are starting to move in the direction of organic cotton, which is basically cotton grown without all the toxic chemicals. Since 1996 Patagonia has only used 100% organic cotton in all of their products, due to an executive decision by owners, "It had to be organic or it wasn't going to be in the line." Organic cotton is not only better for the environment but it is easier on your skin, and the growing demand allows for the price for organic cotton to drop. Obviously there are still many farms that produce cotton using harmfully chemicals. But when more and more companies do what Patagonia did, it will force all cotton producers to think more green.
