Global warming can cause large coral bleaching events in the
long run. Currently there are large amounts of coral bleaching around Hawaii
and the Marshall Islands. There is a chance that this event could be on the
historic scale, experts warn. However, in the short run some coral would
recover providing hope for our reefs. Looking at previously bleached areas of
reefs, scientists were able to use modeling to predict if there would be a
recovery. Using just the water’s depth and the complexity of the coral they
could predict with 98% accuracy using their model. This will allow the
conservation efforts to focus in areas where there is a better chance of
recovery from bleaching. Read more at The Guardian.
