Getting closer to creating affordable emission free vehicles

A research team from The university of Delaware is looking into what it would take to create an emission free vehicle that would be more affordable to the public and have less impact on the environment. Our current best method is through the use of hydrogen fuel cells, which Japan has recently released a hydrogen fueled car which we can expect to see in the States within the next year. The problem with this is that it requires the use of platnum, which is an expensive precious metal and could no be used to replace our current internal combustion engines globally. This group is looking into using alkaline polymers, which would allow use of things like nickel as apposed to platinum, making the production costs lower. This research is still fairly new and the kinks are being worked out, but we should hope to see these ideas in our society within our lifetime. The rest of the article can be read here.
