Roughly 500 animals species have met their demise over the last 500 years. This is from a combination of both natural causes and human causes (with a large portion caused by humans). During this time frame only 15 or so water based species have gone extinct. Scientists are beginning to notice patterns in the oceans ecosystem that follow similar to that of lands. Over the next hundred years, we are expected to see some pretty astounding changes as a result of our impact on the ocean. A few big negatives are all of the industrial fish farming and large scale fishing that are taking place. These two things alone are having a huge impact on our oceans fish populations and overall water quality. Outside of the economical gain, it is surprising so many people are willing to hop on the rising fish market when the problems are already becoming noticeable. Many people are not connecting the dots as to what our effect will have, or maybe they just don't care. Either way we are causing long term damage that we will not be able to reverse any time soon. Because of the current state we are in, it is possible to save the state of the ocean, but the amount of global effort it would require seems meek. The full article can be read here.
