Out of sight and out of mind, huge gyres consisting of trillions
of pieces of plastic continue to spin. Held together by circulating wind, which
in tern creates currents that spin clock wise. Debris or in this case plastic
will get trapped in the cycle and collect over time. Over time the plastic
starts to break down into smaller pieces. Once smaller then 5mm they are classified
as microplastics. Much of the microplastics are eventually picked up in sea ice.
While this is good for removing these harmful pieces from the water, there is uncertainty
surrounding future effects the ice bound plastic may have. Read the Guardian article
