A video found on Science Daily, which sources back to Newsy, addresses President Obama's plan to safeguard the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska, an landscape that is being fought over between people who support the president's plan and attempt to protect it, and those who desire to tap into this land for its natural resources.
Republican senator of Alaska Lisa Murkowski has spent the last decade fighting to open up this area for "exploration and development", which sounds kind of like an okay idea, right? Well, unless she mean intrusion upon ecosystems to harvest limited natural resources and damage the environment for what people like her think is human gain. In the end, developing this kind of landscape is going to cause harm and end up messy.
Obama wants to classify the area as "wilderness", which gives it the highest level of protection the government has to offer. Unfortunately, Murkowski is involved in the Department of the Interior, and this bill needs congressional approval, giving Obama's plan two hoops to jump through before we can say that the ANWR territory is fully protected.
