The Western Antarctic Ice Shelf

As we all know the ocean is on the rise. An increase of emissions produced by humans has helped amplify the greenhouse affect by injecting more radiation trapping gases into the atmosphere. As a result the temperatures around the world have been seen increasing almost two degrees. This increase in global temperature is ill boding for the large ice sheets both in the north and south poles.

However the Antarctic region has been seen undergoing major changes in structure. Large shelves have detached and broken off to sea forming large ice bergs. Currents take the ice bergs north where they eventually melt to the significantly warmer water. In Antarctica scientist have noticed that the Western ice shelf is significantly less stable than the Eastern shelf due to its position closer to warmer water.
