The Bulletin of Atomic Scientists set its symbolic “Doomsday
Clock” three minutes from Doomsday last week due to the global community’s
failure to reduce greenhouse gas emissions as well as the modernization of
nuclear arsenals around the world.
This clock was created in 1947 to emphasize the risks of the
nuclear age. In 2007, it began to factor in climate change as a “dire challenge
to humanity.” The Bulletin believes that world leaders have failed to act
against the threat of climate change and as a result, the world is heading
towards disaster.

This coming December, UN members are planning to meet up in
Paris to develop a plan to limit global warming to 2C. Hopefully this meeting
will provide world leaders the opportunity to come to a consensus on how to
implement effective environmental policies regarding climate change. If we don’t
do anything soon, it may be too late to slow the rate of global warming.
