We all have questioned this at least once in our lifetime. Why in the world is Greenland "green"land when its entire surface is covered in ice? The questions answer comes from the ancient times of the viking ages and the Scandinavian voyages west. In an attempt to draw out settlers to the newly found land, explores named it Greenland in a hope to make it that much more appealing.
So was Greenland ever green? Ice core records retrieved from the Greenland ice shelf tell us that ice has been present in Greenland for at least 400,000 years. Well that throws out the possibility of a green and hospitable world existing in the far north. However it has been observed that during that period of time the norther hemisphere (particularity in Greenland and northern Europe) saw a slightly warmer temperature than the rest of the world hinting at the possibility of resources and fuel such as trees and game on Greenland.
