Climate affecting human speech development
New research is revealing that climate is going to play a key part in the development of language through time. Language is comprised of tones and pitch. In areas that are more humid, it has been observed that languages use more complex tonal patterns consisting of three or more tones. In areas that are dryer, simpler, single tones make up more of the language. This is a prime example of how we adapt to our environment. Something as basic to us as language developed as a result of our surrounding environment. In areas where it is much dryer, like a desert, it would be more adaptive to have to use fewer tones to describe something. Being able to open your mouth for a minimal amount of time reduces the chances of inhaling things that may irritate your throat or lungs. To read more on this, click here.
