In the UK more then 4 million tons of good food is thrown
out every year. One solution came while looking for a way for blind people to
tell if their food is bad. Solveiga Pakstaite came up with
the idea of a label that would leave a bump when the food had expired. She used
gelatine because it starts off solid then becomes a liquid when expired. Since
it expires the same rate as the food, when the bumps produced from the liquid
gelatine appear you know its gone bad. For other foods the amount of gelatine
is changed altering the speed at which it expires. An interesting idea that may
help to reduce good food from being thrown out. Read more at the Guardian.
