Since 2012, satellite images of the Arctic ice cap have
shown that more than 50 meters of the ice has thinned and that ice flow is now
25 times faster. The faster the ice melts, the quicker the sea level will rise,
which has the potential to displace millions of people from their homes. In
fact, a third of the recent sea level rise can be attributed to melting ice
caps and glaciers.

Scientists believe that increasing ocean temperatures in
recent years is what sparked the thinning of the Arctic ice cap, but more data
needs to be collected. Long-term satellite observations will continue to help
scientists determine the causes of climate-related phenomena in the years to
come.
